Most "best fishing spots" lists for Tenerife are written by people who have never left the harbour. The useful way to think about this coast is not a list of pins on a map — it is four kinds of water, each at a different distance from Puerto Colón, each holding different fish.
1. The Near Shelf — 15 to 30 Minutes Out
The ocean floor drops away fast here: from 100 m to several hundred within a couple of nautical miles of the marina. This is where a 4-hour trip spends its time, trolling the drop-offs and working the bait concentrations that gather along them.
Holds: yellowfin tuna, bonito and skipjack, dorado, barracuda. Reaches it: any shared or private 4-hour trip.
2. Volcanic Reef and Structure
Rock and lava formations along the southern coast, fished vertically rather than trolled. Jigs and live bait go down; whatever is holding on the structure comes up fighting dirty.
Holds: amberjack, grouper, dentex, red porgy. Reaches it: 4-hour trips when conditions favour bottom work over trolling — the captain decides on the day.
3. The Shelf Edge and Temperature Breaks — 1 Hour+
Where the Canary Current meets warmer water pushing up from the south, the sea sets up visible current lines and temperature breaks. Bait stacks along them, and everything that eats bait follows. This is the water that separates a half-day from a serious day.
Holds: wahoo, bigeye tuna in the cooler months, larger yellowfin. Reaches it: full-day charters, 8 hours from €1,000.
4. The La Gomera Channel — 1 to 1.5 Hours
The stretch of deep water between Tenerife and La Gomera, 800–2,000 m under the keel, is the most productive billfish ground in the Canaries and the reason Tenerife appears on serious anglers' lists at all.
Holds: blue marlin from July to October, white marlin, big tuna. Resident pilot whales and dolphins on the same water. Reaches it: full-day charters and the 3-day La Gomera safari aboard Tanoa.
Why There Is No Map on This Page
Because a marked chart would be dishonest. Fish move with water temperature, bait and season; a captain reading the surface, the sounder and yesterday's radio traffic will out-fish any published set of coordinates. What is fixed is the geography above — how far out each type of water sits, and therefore how much time you need to fish it.
